Using the site

If you are interested in company car tax, as a driver or fleet manager, then read on:

This site is for individuals given some choice in deciding on their next company car. The car chooser search engine asks a broad range of questions to help narrow the search down to the cars which fit in with key parameters such as number of doors, seats, acceleration and fuel economy. Cars which meet these criteria are then ranked in order of the amount of benefit in kind (BIK)tax payable.Car experts can apply many detailed parameters, but those with less experience should beware of applying too many parameters as no cars will exist for incompatible criteria. If in doubt, you can safely leave the box as "Any" for all fields except minimum and maximum price. The price definition used here is the official on the road list price. The actual purchase price is likely to be lower due to new car discounts or secondhand valuation but these factors will not reduce the tax value. Users should raise the maximum price by the amount of likely discount that is realistic to their situation.

There is a registration fee of £10 to use the above service. This allows for ten searches over a month while the car decision is made. Some users may get the answer in the first search, but ten are available to allow for error or different selections.

If you know exactly which model you want, then the tax calculator can be used free of charge, and without registering. This is more comprehensive than other versions we have seen because it utilises the comcar database, and takes account of the multitude of car derivatives, each with different carbon dioxide emission figures. For instance the automatic version is usually different to the manual on price and CO2 emissions, as well as performance.

Both the tax calculator and car chooser also show the tax payable if the driver has the benefit of free private fuel. Figures are given for last tax year and this (2003/4). Fuel benefit will reduce on low emission cars and rise on those with high emissions. The fuel benefit check helps drivers to decide if this perk is worthwhile.
